Von 1955 bis 1970 forschte Immanuel Wallerstein hauptsächlich zur Kolonialgeschichte Afrikas. 1971 ging Wallerstein an die Universität in Montreal. Seit 1976 ist er Professor für Soziologie an der State University of New York (SUNY) in Binghamton, New York. Bis heute arbeitet er als Direktor des von ihm gegründeten “Fernand Braudel Center for the Study of Economies, Historical Systems, and Civilizations”. Er beschäftigt sich mit afrikanischer Kolonialgeschichte und einer historisch orientierten Wirtschaftssoziologie.
