The English word, ‘animalism’, has many, very different meanings. There is a philosophical aspect that assumes that human beings are also to be regarded as animals. Then there is an album by the British rock band, The Animals. And George Orwell used it as an allegory for Communism in his famous book, Animal Farm. In German, the word ‘Animalismus’, is used primarily in the sense of the religious connection to animals which are considered to have souls or to possess a higher power. In general, one could say that the term indicates an obsession for everything that has to do with animals, including a possible new ‘ism’ in art…
Das englische Wort „Animalism“ besitzt mehrere, mitunter völlig verschiedene Verwendungen.... Da gibt es eine philosophische Richtung, die davon ausgeht, dass auch menschliche Wesen als Tiere zu betrachten seien. Ferner ein Album der britischen Rockband The Animals. Und George Orwell benutzte es als Allegorie für den Kommunismus in seinem berühmten Buch Animal farm. Im Deutschen wird das Wort „Animalismus“ vor allem im Sinne der religiösen Bindung an Tiere verwendet, die als beseelt oder Sitz einer höheren Macht betrachtet werden. Insgesamt könnte man meinen, der Terminus signalisiert eine Obsession für alles, was mit Tieren zu tun haben könnte. Möglicherweise auch einen neuen „Ismus“ in der Kunst …
