HOUSE OF LEAVES von Mark Z.Danielewski ist eine herausfordernde Lektüre, ein Labyrinth, in dem sich der Leser ebenso verliert wie die Charaktere der Geschichte. Mehrere Protagonisten in unterschiedlichen Zeitlinien bilden den Weg, um ein Rätsel zu lösen: ein Haus, das sich im Inneren ausdehnt, während es von außen seine Abmessungen beibehält. Die beunruhigende Fremdartigkeit des Innenraums ohne wirkliche Grenzen lässt die Angst entstehen, sich selbst zu verlieren.

Mit dem Bild DÉDALE habe ich mich der Herausforderung gestellt, das Thema von Danielewskis Roman bildnerisch umzusetzen.... Durch die Verwendung dicker Malschichten konnte ich eine Struktur aufbauen, um Raum und Perspektive zu kennzeichnen und damit auch ein Gefühl der Instabilität, als ob sich die Form des abgebildeten Innenraums verändern würde. Ich habe das Hauptthema des Buches auf mein eigenes Haus übertragen (denn mein Wohnumfeld ist immer ein zentraler Aspekt meiner Arbeit). Ich verlasse mich auf das, was ich sehe, der Raum ist also auch eine mentale Konstruktion, mit der ich experimentiere; eine Konstruktion, in welcher sich der Betrachter verlieren könnte, wo ihm alternative Routen und Aussichtspunkte geboten werden, wo er sich seine ganz persönliche Mythologie vorstellen kann. HOUSE OF LEAVES is a challenging read, a labyrinth in which the reader loses himself as much as the characters in the story do. Several protagonists in different timelines make up the path in order to solve a mystery: a house which expands inside while keeping unchanged dimensions on the outside. The disturbing strangeness of the interior space gives rise to the anguish of losing oneself. To make the story more realistic the author writes as if he were using found footage made by an amateur film maker.

With DÉDALE I rose to the challenge of using paint to convey the unfamiliar and unsettling subject matter of Danielewski’s novel. My use of thick layers enables me build a structure and signify space and perspective. It also creates a sense of instability as if the interior depicted were changing in form. I also transposed the main theme of the book into my own household (my living environment being a key aspect my work). In the process of depicting this environment, I rely on what I see and but also on the memory of it, which explains the amplification and distortion of certain areas and details. The space is therefore also a mental construction which I experiment with; a construction where the viewer might lose himself, where he is given alternative routes and viewpoints, where he can imagine his own personal mythology.
