Philipp Gufler’s multidisciplinary practice emerges out of the artist’s interest to explore non-heteronormative counter images of predominant historiography as well as its institutions and constructed identities. An active member of the self-organized LGBTIQ* archive Forum Queeres Archiv München, his works — ranging from screen printing and performance to artist books and video — often refer to queer places and historical personalities who fundamentally criticized the norms and values of their time....

Gufler’s first solo exhibition in Vienna brings together new and existing works. Filmed in the Fondation Vasarely in Aix-en-Provence, his 2019 video work “The Responsive Body” calls into question the idea of a male-dominated art history of modernist art, and emphasizes the artist’s collaborative practice integrating other artists as well as activists and academics from different generations and contexts. Together with a new selection of his screen-printed mirror works, Gufler will also present three newly produced quilts: a series of multi-layered textile works and silk prints dedicated to the photographer and painter Pierre Molinier, the composer and artist Henri Nouveau as well as the Austrian academic Peter Gorsen and his partner Hanel Koeck, an important performer and figure within the context of Viennese Actionism.
