die stipendiatinnen des internationalen residenzprogramms für visuelle künste und neue medien im künstlerhaus büchsenhausen stellen sich und ihre arbeit vor: onomé ekeh (usa) - medienkünstlerin rixt hoekstra (niederlande) - architekturtheoretikerin monica mctighe (usa) - kunsttheoretikerin mittwoch, 31. mai 2006, 20.00 uhr künstlerhaus büchsenhausen, weiherburggasse 13, innsbruck nach den präsentationen laden wir zu einem von den stipendiatinnen zubereiteten buffet ein. onomé ekeh (usa) - medienkünstlerin born and raised on both sides of the atlantic, onomé ekeh studied at the university of benin, nigeria (fine & applied arts) and at the school of visual arts, new york city (film studies programme). she started out as a painter, gravitated towards design and fell in love with cinema. the collusion effect is a lifelong fascination with hybrid forms of media and their perpetuation in contemporary culture. she has written for film, literary and technological journals both in europe and the united states; produced works for theater; and created 'radio fictions'. she is also a frequent collaborator in a number of cross-disciplinary projects. she lives in new york city and is a member of hip replacement, a collaborative for music performances and film. onomé ekeh's project at künstlerhaus büchsenhausen 'machine fragments' & the mechanae is conceived a series of (narrative) sonic interludes. at the heart of the project are questions about artificial intelligence, spun differently: how do (or would) machines perceive us? how are we similar to our technology? these tropes are built in to the writing of 'machine fragments'. the stories themselves are abstractions of the turing test developed to test for intelligence in machines. except here, the questions are turned on humans. http://thememorexe.com http://machine.thememorexe.com rixt hoekstra (niederlande) - architekturtheoretikerin rixt hoekstra has studied architectural history and theory in groningen (rug), venice (iuav) and new york (columbia university). she recently finished her dissertation about the italian architectural historian manfredo tafuri. during her stay at the künstlerhaus büchsenhausen rixt hoekstra will deal with a new theme, that of architectural criticism. “it is my intention to write an intellectual history of architectural historians who, in dealing with modern architecture, were at the same time their foremost critics. for example, intellectuals like bruno zevi or nikolaus pevsner. but i also intend to deal with the future of architectural criticism. what, if any, is the future of criticism in times of the postmodern, of the end of the grand narrative, or even in times of the postcritical?” (rixt hoekstra) monica mctighe (usa) - kunsttheoretikerin monica mctighe graduated with her ph.d. from the university of virginia in 2005. she will begin as an assistant professor of art history at tufts university in boston in fall 2006. at the latest whitney biennial, several installations featured film projectors positioned where viewers could hear the now old-fashioned sound of the film whirring through the film feeder. such nostalgic gestures seem regressive, but several critics have recently claimed that nostalgia can be a form of critique. monica mctighe's project will investigate this claim by examining how artists such as renée green and diana thater employ outmoded technologies such as slide shows and record players in their work. her hypothesis is that in this work these now nostalgic products of modern consumer culture are revealed to have been vestiges of collective engagement. in this way, nostalgia may provide perspectives by which to examine how the mass media and the market continuously reconfigure social relations. -- Kunstlerhaus Buchsenhausen Weiherburggasse 13/12 6020 Innsbruck, Austria phone +43 512 278627-10 fax +43 512 278627-11 office@buchsenhausen.at http://buchsenhausen.at
